Two letters of Charles I Anjou, have come up to our days, dated on April 17th, 1274, in which he gives some privileges to the merchant from Durrës, he excludes from the customs duties and any other tax, all the goods that will be bought, sold and brought by the citizens in Durres, and everything that belongs to the city. These documents prove that Durres at the time has been an important port in Adriatic and a lively commercial centre but also for the promotion and development of production and of the region economy in general.
