After the proclamation of the so-called “Republic of Mirdita” by Gjon Markagjoni, promoted and supported by Belgrade, the Albanian government was put into operation for the liquidation of the separatist movement. In July-August, fierce fighting between Albanian government forces and those of Marka Gjoni took place, with not only a few, Yugoslavian “volunteers” and Russian bourgeoisies of General Vrangel. On August 5, 1921, the government of Iliaz Vrioni drew the attention of the League of Nations for the Belgrade military intervention in Albania and demanded the prohibition of aggression.
