In addition to the castle located in the center of the city on Mangalem, in the district of Berat there are several old muranoes around it, which were once inhabited castles.
Among them we can distinguish:
– “Tomorri Castle (DODONA)” Monument of Culture
It is located above the village by the name Tomorr i Madh. The inhabited castle, built in antiquity, rises over a rocky plateau, steep, about 50 m high, which is reached through a narrow pedestrian street. At the top of this rocky massif are the acropolis walls, which do not belong to just a period.
The Acropolis has a circumference of about 210 m, wall thickness 1 -1,3 m and has the shape of an irregular trapezium. The ancient wall belongs to the pre-Byzantine stage.
This castle center has been in a very good strategic position for protection and important drifts from the coast to Constantinople.
The castle prevails over all the forts of Berat, Mbiesovo. Peshtani, Mbolan, Vojak, Citizen of Qerfirfiloit and Vokopola fortress.
The castle was marked on the chronicles of the time during the collapse of the Bulgarian Empire during 1018, as was mentioned during the events of 1336, as a meeting place for a number of important battles.
The castle was used by the Turks during the Turkish rule.
In the fortress there are ruins of the water tank with a capacity of about 100,000 liters of water.
Studies on this castle have long been interrupted.
In recent years this country has become a very attractive place for tourists. Some tour operators organize tours around this area.
– “The Castle of Krotina” (Dimali)
The ancient city of Dimal lies on the western side of Mount Shpirag, on the left side of the Berat-Fier motorway.
The ruins of the ancient city are located in the place called Kalaja e Krotinës, (a toponym taken from the neighborhood of the same name in the village of Allambrez).
The geographical conditions (444 m above sea level) and the strategic position of the hill created very favorable conditions for the development of a settlement in ancient times.
The proximity of the city with other important settlements such as Apolonia and Bylis, gave special importance to the development of trade relations with these centers.
Identification of the ruins of the settlement on the hill of Krotina for the first time is presented by Austrian archaeologist K. Prashniker, in the period of World War I …
– “Gorica Castle”
It lies on the houses of the Gorica neighborhood. The construction technique as well as ceramics belong to the 4th century BC. The archaeological remains of the castle indicate that this settlement is earlier than the century. Ill. Pkr.
The cessation of life in the fortress of Gorica after the c. The 11th before Christ’s birth is related to the Roman invasion. In this castle is put through a pedestrian alley that passes over the neighborhood with the same name. The view of the city offered by the Gorica fortress is quite beautiful.
Today, these ancient settlements are historical and cultural tourism facilities.
