In the premises of the Gjirokastra Fortress was presented last weekend, the completion of the project for the reorganization of the green space where the OTOMANE balls were exposed and the re-exposure of the latter to other aesthetic conditions, more qualitative and timely And the type of this kind of weaponry.
The project, carried out in cooperation with the Peace Corps and CHwB Albania, coincided with the 12th anniversary of the city’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The event was attended by the Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, the Peace Corps Governor for Albania, Kate Becker, CHwB Albania Director, Lejla Hadžić, Gjirokastra Municipal Council Chairman, Armand Hilaj, Artemisa Dralo, heritage experts as well as many other guests.
In her speech, Kumbaro said that “Gjirokastra should use the trademark as a UNESCO protected city. Gjirokastra can not have other development opportunities, except combining the potential of cultural heritage with the economic potential of development.
Today we are talking about the number of 22,000 visitors to the castle, about 3,000 more visitors compared to the previous year. ”
Further, she noted that this city has already turned into a construction site, with the goal of returning to the capital of tourism.
The new tourist image of Gjirokastra will grow with the reconstruction of the facades of the buildings in the lower part of the city. This project comes as a government cooperation with the Albanian Development Fund, funded by the Council of Europe Development Bank, in the amount of around 200 million ALL. It aims to rehabilitate the facades of 140 buildings built before the 90s.
